The material used on each tool effects it's durability and it's speed/ damage.
Pickaxe - The most useful tool. Effective against stone and ores, as well as obsidian. Comes in 5 tiers. Wood, gold, stone, iron, and diamond. Wood - Stone, coal. Stone - Stone, coal, iron, gold. Gold - Stone, coal, iron, gold. Iron - Stone, coal, gold, iron, diamond, lapis lazuli, redstone. Diamond - Stone, coal, gold, iron, lapis lazuli, diamond, obsidian, redstone. Made by putting a stick in 5 and 8 on the 3x3 square, and 3 of the chosen tier in 1,2, and 3 on the 3x3 square.
Axe - Used for collecting wood from trees. Can be made from 5 tiers. Made by putting a stick in 5 and 8 on the 3x3, and putting a block of the chosen tier in 1,2, and 4 on the 3x3.
Shovel - Used for collecting dirt, sand, gravel, and soul sand. Also used as a humourous way to kill chickens. Made by putting a stick in 5 and 8 on the 3x3, and by putting 1 block of a tier in 2 on the 3x3.
Sword - Used to cause damage to mobs. Tier effects damage. Made by putting a stick in 8 on the 3x3 and a block of the chosen tier in 5 and 2 on the 3x3.
Hoe - Used for farming. Tier effects durability. Hoe used to gather seeds from tall grass, for creating farmland, and for harvesting grown wheat. Made by putting a stick in 5 and 8 on the 3x3, and a block of the chosen tier in 1 and 2 of the 3x3.
